As we mentioned earlier, a cruise ship can be thought of as a hotel
that floats and travels on the water. This means that in addition to
the traditional deck and engine department positions like captain,
deck officer, chief engineer, assistant engineer, cruise ships exhibit
the greatest variety of jobs throughout the other departments. The
Dept. of Labor doesn't collect and analyze wage and salary
information for the vast majority of cruise ships. This is because
most are not U.S. entities. They sail under the flags of the
Bahamas, Bermuda, Panama and other sovereign nations that
offer advantages over U.S. registry. However, the Dept. of Labor
does collect and analyze wage and salary information for many
jobs that appear to be close counterparts of jobs found on cruise
ships. Wage and salary information from the DOL is offered for
these positions.
